Apparently it earned the name ¨Death Road¨because it is long one lane dirt road with tons of blind curves. Naturally there were many car accidents and so Bolivians came to call it that. But now they´ve opened a new paved two lane road, so no cars go on the old dirt road really. However every day a lot of tourists make the 10,000 foot drop in altitude along the winding road. In terms of danger, eh… If you fell off you would certainly be dead or at least seriously injured, but thats true of lots of roads in California (although Christina pointed out they usually have barriers), and about 2 tourists do die each year - the last one was apparently 3 weeks ago so I figured I was safe.
